    For paraplegic , a bed would be the best for a long flight. Risk of blood clot is a major concern while sitting for more than 5 hours.

    Love that real solutions are being created but have a question ... I've yet to see a demo of how a seat belt would be integrated in any of these systems - am I missing something? With recent stories of increasing turbulence encountered on flights, this is a concern ...

    Curious as to your opinion John of which accommodation between this and DFC's might make it first onto planes?

    I love the fact that flying might be more accessable....i am a quad. I need a companion seat beside me....especially during landing. Across the aisle won't work. We currently would drive for days in order to avoid wheelchair flights, which ALWAYS damage my wheelchair and/or lose parts (security take off for inspection & "forget" to put back on...sonetimes they are sent on a different flight elsewhere) Is there a hope to be able to leave functioning batteries in the chair to change tilt degree & avoid pressure sores on long flights?

    Thanks for the video. On transatlantic flights, that cabin tends to be business class. Also, how would you use a food tray or in-flight entertainment system? I think the Delta Airlines system would be better for me as a manual chair user..still issues about getting down the aisle.

    This looks similar to what paratransit uses and could be used with some manual wheelchairs. My nightmare on paratransit is the jostling that occurs on uneven road surfaces. I am concerned that the wheelchair would not be stable during turbulence.

  • @moyagray
    @moyagray 28 днів тому

    If the securements are rugged enough for turbulence then this is a good start but definitely items need a companion seat either next to or directly across the aisle.

  • @gassman55
    @gassman55 28 днів тому

    A suggestion would be to be able to use the 2 seats behind and then give them the chair to store below. The benefit is that I don't need to transfer onto the aisle chair and be handled twice. This would be my option or move the space over a bit so a spouse or caregiver can sit next to you aiding when needed.

    Promising but would only work if the wheelchair has a place to attach hooks, not all power chairs can be secured that way. But at least the chair does not have to be surrendered to baggage handlers so there’s a lower risk of damage to the chair from mishandling. More interested in the airlines getting companion friendly accessible washrooms on ALL planes.

    • @jo-anndumont4692
      @jo-anndumont4692 20 днів тому

      In Calgary wheelchair hooks are automatically installed on power wheelchairs at some vendor locations when chairs are purchased. I see this as a wheelchair owners responsibility...not the airlines responsibility, although they could require a stand one

  • @rayjordan3294

    This is promising. I would like to see wheelchair spaces come in pairs though. A single space may restrict couples, who may both be power wheelchair users, from travelling together.

    What I see here is progress, but not a scalable solution. I doubt hundreds of hurried Delta passengers will be willing to wait for the time it takes to convert the chair. Add on the time it would take to park/lock. I know this wasn't your chair, but I lived in NYC for many years and even the lock system on the bus wasn't ideal. The wheelchair passenger then becomes the focus of an already tense traveling public. They should lose the closet or reconfigure the galley to make a more open space with a safety bar or something that drops overhead like a rollercoaster given the turbulence issues these days.

    Where is the passenger seat belt for takeoff and landing. How many such seats would be on each plane? Is the seat next to this space for a regular passenger, since seat cushions were stored under it? I wonder how much maneuvering room would there actually be on a real plane? How much room would flight attendants have to prepare the seat? How heavy are the components. Will females and shorter men be able to transform the seating area? How will wheelchair users access the toilet? A lot more work needs to be done on this prototype before it is truly ready for use. What about manual wheelchair and rollator users?

    And about time too! Air travel is such a traumatic and often embarrassing time for a disabled wheelchair user. Well done, keep up the good work. Although, that is a rather small powered wheelchair. My husband's chair is huge, it would stick out a lot more than that. It's wider and higher too! Would also have been better to actually see it positioning into an actual cabin, where there is far less room for maneuver!!!

    The reason most people who use wheelchairs fly with a companion is that the onboard facilities are generally incompatible with people who are otherwise completely independent outside an aircraft. It reminds me of a meeting I attended about upgrading tram stops so that people with wheelchairs could board the trams. There was significant community opposition because there would be a negative effect on on-street parking. One community member objected, saying "why are we doing this? Nobody in a wheelchair rides the tram anyway". Really? Of course they don't because they can't get on.

    I'd like to see it work in a real world setting not a mocked up stage. I appreciate the thought and effort but I don't see it being practical. They would be giving up the space of 2 or more seats for one chair.

    That's a very small wheelchair you are using. Much smaller than what many people have. I wonder what their size limits are? Also, you're sitting very upright. Does this system allow for the chair back to recline at all?

  • @janescott7605
    @janescott7605 Рік тому

    Wow! It would fab to take our chairs into the cabin. Driving challenges of the day aside, I'm wondering how there will be enough space to manoeuvre in a plane. In this demo you have A LOT of space around you.

  • @davidleakenneyphotography

    Looks fantastic, been hoping for someting like this for a long time! Just hoping that there will be enough space for a mid wheel powered chair as they tend to be a bit longer.

    I was just denied flying by Alaska Airlines because my chair is over their 33 inch maximum height. It is a specialty seating power chair and does not fold down.

    • @walkingdan
      @walkingdan Рік тому

      sorry to hear that. Just thinking out loud. They can recline the power chair down to 33 inches in height; however I wouldn't trust them, because they'll try to drive in a reline position and crush it. In other case, they might try to remove the backrest of the power chair and completely messed up, because they don't have trained wheelchair technician to do it. Person A from the departure cargo area dismount the chair and Person B at the designation cargo area will try to put it together without any instructions.
